Facts About The Epic Launch In SA

WhatsApp drama will provide a rare opportunity for South Africans to watch drama series they usually see on television screens through the social network.

Soon, soapie fans in SA will be treated to a world-first opportunity to watch a seven-part drama series through WhatsApp.

Written by former Generations soapie head writer Bongi Ndaba, the drama will unfold through WhatsApp videos‚ pictures‚ voice notes and text messages. Also, it details a tragedy that befalls the Langa family.

Speaking to Times Media, Ndaba said she accepted the challenge knowing it’s not going to be a walk in the park.

“I have never written like this before and it was especially tricky because it’s never been done before so we had no reference,” she said.

She was approached by production company‚ King James‚ to assist in creating what would be a fresh way to advertise an insurance company’s services. However, in the drama titled Uk’shona Kwelanga which has a double meaning – ‘the sunset’ or also ‘the death of Langa’ the insurance company didn’t come up.

“There is nowhere in any of the episodes where we mention the insurance company. It’s all about silent advertising,” Ndaba added.

The WhatsApp drama idea is considered a perfect concept for the South African market. This is because South Africans love soapies. Thus, it is an effective way to pull get their attention. Besides, Whatsapp is accessible to almost everyone in the country.

Media analyst, Arthur Goldstuck hailed this as an ideal initiative. Though there have been similar initiatives like Mxit in the past, this is a world first.

The drama boasts an all-star cast comprising of veteran actress Thembi Mtshali‚ Linda Sokhulu‚ Makgotso Monyemokhathoe‚ Ivy Nkutha‚ Bongani Madondo and John Nhlanhla.
