50/50 Presenter Killed In Bar Robbery

Carte Blanche producer and presenter of the long-running wildlife show 50/50 Johann Botha has died.

According to several online reports, he was shot dead during a robbery at the Zebra Inn in the Maboneng district. The ugly incident took place on Wednesday night at 19:30.

Also, Pretoria FM reporter, Anton Meijer tweeted that the owner of the Zebra Inn bar was also killed alongside Botha during the robbery.

RSG posted on Facebook; “Johann’s death was a giant loss for the country, media and the people of South Africa.”

Carte Blanche executive producer George Mazakaris paid tribute, saying the team is devastated.

“Johann Botha was a remarkable highly experienced television producer and presenter. He was an immensely invaluable member of the Carte Blanche team and it is a considerable loss. We’re devastated.”

The 50/50 team also paid tribute to the fallen presenter.

His death has once again shed light on the upsurge of crime and violence in the country. As a result, the police have currently launched a manhunt for four suspects, three men and a woman, in connection with the recent shooting.

According to police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela, four people including three men and a woman entered the bar. They bought food and then pointed a gun at the owner. Unfortunately, the owner was shot in the process as well as Johann Botha who happened to be present at the time. Both were shot in the upper body and died on the spot.

After studying drama, Botha started working for the SABC in 1988. During his career, Johann Botha worked as SABC radio presenter on the public broadcaster’s Afrikaans radio station RSG where he presented several youth centred shows in the past.

He currently worked as a producer on M-Net’s Carte Blanche investigative magazine show, mostly doing environmental impact stories.

He will be highly missed. Rest in peace comrade.
