CNN Fires Kathy Griffin Over Photo Shoot With Severed Trump Head

American stand-up comedian Kathy Griffin has been fired by CNN.

Therefore, Griffin will not be back as co-host of CNN’s annual New Year’s Eve program as announced by the network on Wednesday.

“CNN has terminated our agreement with Kathy Griffin to appear on our New Year’s Eve program,” the network said in a statement.

Griffin lost a decade-long gig ringing in the new year for CNN following a backlash over her video displaying a likeness of President Donald Trump’s severed head.

CNN’s decision to cut ties with the comedian comes a day after photos of herself holding a bloody severed head looking like that of President Trump went viral.

As a result, the network which had called the images “disgusting and offensive” announced on Wednesday that it would not invite her back this year for the Times Square live New Year’s Eve special. She had co-hosted the show since 2007 with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

Trump couldn’t take Griffin’s video lying down either. Thus, taking to Twitter on Wednesday morning, he said Griffin “should be ashamed of herself”. “My children, especially my 11-year-old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!”

Also, first lady Melania Trump weighed in on the matter:

“As a mother, a wife, and a human being, that photo is very disturbing. When you consider some of the atrocities happening in the world today, a photo opportunity like this is simply wrong and makes you wonder about the mental health of the person who did it.”

Meanwhile, Trump and his family weren’t the only ones who found the video disturbing. A New Mexico casino has also cancelled a performance by Griffin. Apparently, she was scheduled to perform at Route 66 Casino, operated by Laguna Pueblo, on 22 July.

Again, a commercial endorsement deal she just landed a few weeks ago was cancelled. Squatty Potty, a Utah-based company whose products include toilet stools and other bathroom accessories, said it was suspending an ad campaign that featured Griffin.

Bobby Edwards, the company’s CEO said they were both shocked and disappointed by the video. “It was deeply inappropriate and runs contrary to the core values our company stands for,” he said.

“I am a true supporter of free speech, but feel Kathy crossed the line,” Edwards added. “I regret having to make these decisions, but have no choice.”

Meanwhile, Kathy Griffin has since apologized for the disturbing photos. They were taken by provocative celebrity photographer Tyler Shields.

“I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far,” she said in a video posted to Instagram late Tuesday. “I made a mistake and I was wrong.”

She admitted that the images were “too disturbing” and asked Shields to take them down.

Unfortunately, her apology was coming a bit late as it couldn’t save her from losing her job and endorsements.

While she may never have riled a celeb of the magnitude of President Donal Trump, the 56-year-old comic has gotten into trouble with her jokes a lot

She was fired from her job as an E! network red-carpet commentator in 2015 after joking at the Golden Globe Awards that child actress Dakota Fanning had checked into rehab.

Two years later, while accepting an Emmy for her Bravo reality series, “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List,” she said;

“A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus.”

She concluded her speech by holding up her trophy and saying, “Suck it, Jesus. THIS is my God now!”

Her remarks raised a lot of eyebrows including Catholic League President Bill Donohue, who called it a “vulgar, in-your-face brand of hate speech.”

Notwithstanding, Griffin remained unrepentant.

“I have a no-apology policy,” she told CBS News in 2012. “No apologies for jokes. I apologise in my real life all the time. I say ridiculous things, I make mistakes constantly. But when I’m onstage, I’m at a microphone … it’s a joke!”

That leaves us wondering why she decided to apolgise this time around.
