Maimane Lays Corruption,Treason Charges Against Zuma And Guptas
The leader of the Democratic Alliance Mmusi Maimane has officially laid Treason and corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma and South Africa’s wealthy family, the Guptas.
The opposition leader laid the charges against the president and his family friend at the Cape Town Police Station on Tuesday morning.
The charges were also against the Gupta brothers – Atul, Ajay and Rajesh – as well as Ashu Chawla (chief executive of Gupta-owned Sahara Computers), Nazeem Howa (director of various Gupta-linked companies and former CEO of Oakbay Investments), Mosebenzi Zwane (alleged Gupta-appointed Minister of Mineral Resources), Malusi Gigaba (alleged Gupta-appointed Minister of Finance).

Others mentioned in the corruption charges include Faith Muthambi (alleged Gupta-appointed Minister of Communications), Des van Rooyen (alleged Gupta-appointed former Minister of Finance and current Minister of COGTA), Duduzane Zuma (director of Gupta-linked companies and oldest son of the president) and Matshela Koko (suspended Senior Executive of Eskom).
The charges against the above named follow a recently leaked email which the DA believed is a good proof that would help pull Zuma and his cronies down.
Speaking a while after he laid the charges, Maimane said that it was “clear from the evidence” that Zuma, the Guptas and the rest of the accused committed these offences “in concert with one another”. Hence, the law must now take its course and those implicated must face criminal charges.
“The law must now take its course. Each of these individuals must be held accountable for their actions and must face the full force of the law,” Maimane said.
According to the charge sheet, Zuma is listed as “Accused No.1”, and his “corrupt relationship with the Gupta family has been a major source of discontent within both his own party – the ANC – and the South African public”.
The Gupta brothers are all listed as “Accused 2,3 and 4” respectively and the charge sheet states that “it was, inter-alia, alleged that Accused 2, 3 and 4 were offering Cabinet positions to chosen individuals and influencing the running of government.”
“The DA will pursue every available avenue until the corrupt State Capture project that has undermined and crippled key institutions of the state, is stopped and the ANC is removed from power.
“We will not allow Zuma Inc. to continue to steal from our people. We must earnestly focus South Africa towards building a prosperous nation, where jobs can be created for all,” Maimane said.
Meanwhile, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has charged institutions handling the controversial state capture reports to hasten up with their enquiries and punish those implicated in it.
He said South Africa and the ruling ANC will only stand to their feets when the “elephants in the room” are brought to book.

The deputy president also noted that the issue is eating the ANC alive and preventing it from implementing its policies.
“The ANC wants this decision to be implemented. It doesn’t want the decision to be put at the bottom of the cupboard because this issue of state capture is busy eating the ANC away,” Ramaphosa told delegates at union federation Cosatu’s central committee meeting under way in Centurion.
“Let us welcome, hope, pray and trust that this decision is going to be implemented. that commission must be established. No matter what,” he said as he called for a judicial inquiry into state capture to be established as a matter of urgency.
