Red Bull Music Academy Weekender Lines Up Hot SA Artists

After years of travelling the world and collaborating with more than 1 500 artists, the Red Bull Music Academy Weekender (RBMAW) is set to make its debut in South Africa.

The four-day music festival experience taking place from 1-4 September, will host no less than 60 artists from SA and beyond.

A range of genres from hip-hop and ragga to electronica and house music will be covered in the Red Bull Music Academy Weekender.

The selected artist will perform across seven iconic music venues in and around downtown Johannesburg, including Bassline, 1 Fox, And Club, Kitcheners, Carfaxx, Great Dane and Zone 6.

Thursday at Bassline in Newtown will mark the beginning of the festival, with the RBMA Weekender’s reggae night, featuring African Storm Sound System with Admiral and Jahseed and special guests.

Friday night will be time for eight hours of non-stop music at different venues that are close to each other for easy navigation.

The Red Bull Music Academy Weekender will reach its climax on Saturday night, September 3 at 1 Fox in downtown Joburg. South Africa’s AKA, Nigeria’s Patoranking, Christian Tiger School and Jullian Gomes, among others, will keep the crowds on their feet the whole night.

New Zealand natives and global sensations Fat Freddy’s Drop will also grace the stage on Saturday.

Finally, Sunday will see the RBMA Weekender moves to Zone 6 in Soweto. Hot artists like Black Coffee, Culoe De Song, Riky Rick, Oskido, King Bruce, and Mafia Boyz will entertain the crowd with live performances.

Fat Freddy’s Drop’s Chopper Reeds, aka Scott Towers says they are excited to be playing for the first time in South Africa.

“Fans can look forward to some classics as this’ll be the first time we’ve performed them in South Africa. And some box fresh vibes as we’ll be fighting fit after a four-week European tour just prior to the RBMA Weekender,” said Chopper Reeds in a statement.

Festival-goers can expect to be taken on different musical journeys over the four days from day to night.
