Plateau Women Stage Peaceful Protest Over Their Monarch’s Murder

Plateau Women in Bokkos LGA of the State on Wednesday, July 20, staged a peaceful protest to show their grievances over the gruesome killing of their traditional ruler. The women, clad in black clothes, carried placards through the streets of Bokkos.

Lazarus Agai, the Saf Ron-kulere and First Class traditional ruler of the Ron/Kulere tribe of Bokkos LGA was murdered by unknown assailants suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on Monday, July 18.

The 76-year-old monarch, who reigned for 42 years, was murdered along with his wife, son and bodyguard on his way to Bokkos after visiting his farm in Sha District of the chiefdom.

Following the incidence, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State declared a curfew in the area and summoned an emergency meeting of security agencies so as to come up with strategies to prevent reprisals from aggrieved groups.

Simon Lalong condemned the killing, and described the cold blooded murder as “despicable, cowardly, very gruesome, babaric and sad”, adding that he received the news (of the killing) with a heavy heart.

In a statement signed by Mr Emmanuel Nanle, Director of Press Affairs, Lalong said that the people and government of Plateau were pained by the unfortunate wave of killing of traditional rulers in Bokkos Local government Council, and reiterated his determination to end the trend.

He declared that government will work together with all peace loving citizens of the State to secure and sustain the peace on the Plateau.

The governor assured the people that government was in control of the situation and would fish out all enemies of the peace that had returned to the State.

While expressing his deep condolences to the family of the deceased, the people of Bokkos and the entire people of Plateau State over the loss, Lalong appealed to the citizens, particularly residents of Bokkos Local Government, to remain calm and not engage in any act capable of aggravating the situation.
